Tree Lighting & Holiday Parade

Don't be late for the annual Tree Lighting on Friday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m. on the lawn of Wilmette's Village Hall. You'll delight in the blaze of color when the tree is illuminated and be enthralled by sweet voices singing holiday carols.

Bring the kids, grandparents, friends and neighbors for the annual Holiday Parade, Saturday, November 23rd. The parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. from the CTA parking lot at 4th Street and Linden Avenue and proceeds west on Central Avenue to Village Center at Wilmette Avenue. Gather along the parade route to watch local bands, classic cars, clowns, street performers, school groups, businesses, community and civic organizations and more. Bring your cameras and snap your holiday card photo with Santa in front of Village Hall immediately following the parade.

Keep the fun going with complimentary horse-drawn sleigh rides through Village Center Board the sleigh on Greenleaf Avenue. Community groups and businesses are encouraged to create a float or drive a decorated car, bus or truck in the Holiday Parade. Judges will be choosing awards for the best floats or decorated vehicles.

To participate in the Holiday Parade, contact the Wilmette/Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce.

"Home sales and home remodeling usually rise and fall in tandem, but remodeling may now be recovering faster. Remodeling first began to surge in 2009, well before home prices and sales began their recovery. Investors purchased millions of distressed homes, many of which had been gutted or even vandalized by disgruntled former owners.."

Remembering Veteran's Day

While World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, fighting had ceased seven months earlier when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”   Today is the first time in a long time that we are actually recognizing our veterans on the official Veteran's Day.

On this day, I think of my beloved grandfather, Lewis M. Means, who served in the army in France during WWI and was the Commanding General 70th Brigade during WWII.

Around his 80th birthday, I was with him.  Coincidentally, it was at the same time as Eisenhower's death, so we were watching the funeral services together on TV.  When the bugler started playing Taps, I saw tears in my grandfather's eyes.  I know he was remembering all the many people with whom he had served, who had died in these tragic wars.   That simple memory stays with me and I am ever grateful for the servicemen and women who have protected our country through so many sad and challenging times.

God bless you, Veterans.
